In July, 2000 the population of the Netherlands was estimated at 15,892,237 and in 2001, the population reached 16,000,000. A breakdown of its residents, based upon the 2000 estimation is as follows:

0-14 years: 18% (male 1,497,290; female 1,431,671)
15-64 years: 68% (male 5,490,518; female 5,305,848)
65 years and over: 14% (male 885,839; female 1,281,071)

The population growth rate, also based on 2000 estimates, is 0.57%; the birth rate at 12.12 births/1,000 population; the death rate at 8.72 deaths/1,000 population; and the net migration rate at 2.3 migrant(s)/1,000 population. The infant mortality rate (also based on 2000 estimates) is 4.42 deaths/1,000 live births; and the total fertility rate is shown to be 1.64 children born/woman.
